Designer Alvar Aalto noticed that light could shape the nature and mood of interior spaces and used his curiosity to create innovative lighting fixtures. Avoiding glaring light sources, his lamps alter artificial lighting to simulate a natural light. In addition to Aalto, Artek features three other prominent Finnish designers in this lighting collection; Artek founder Maire Gullichsen, award winning architect Juha Leiviskä, and Artek's design director Ben af Schultén.
