The story behind the 2015 Annual Glass Bird is as compelling and poetic as the mouth-blown glass masterpiece itself. Inspired by a 19th century Finnish folk collection of poetry called the Kanteletar, Lakla (Bean Goose) is an imaginative character who acts as a lawyer for a willow warbler accused of stealing grain from a field. Lakla's emerald color is an ode to the forests, which hold mysticism and meaning not only in Finnish literature but living, too. This transparent green glass is contrasted by a beak and wings of opal, each with a unique swirled detailing handcrafted by the blowers at iittala's works in Finland.The birds of Oiva Toikka's 2015 collection are individually mouth-blown by the master glassblowers at iittala’s glassworks in Finland. With production limited to only one year, each handcrafted iittala Toikka Lakla carries the signature “O. Toikka IITTALA 2015” on its base to ensure authenticity.
