Decorative artist and glass designer Goran Höngell set a trend for minimalist glass design in 1950s with the introduction of his Aarne glassware collection. It was awarded a gold medal at the esteemed Milan Triennale of 1954; selected as the symbol of the iittala glassworks for its 100th anniversary in 1981; and is featured in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.Aarne remains one of the most classic shapes in the world of tabletop design. These glasses are beautiful, sleek, and they feel great in the hand. A nice weight on the bottom and the flare makes them feel secure. I like to use them as wine glasses as well as for cocktails.

Now that iitala has stopped making its stemless wine glass in its award-winning Aarne series, the Old Fashioned glass is an excellent alternative, with more appropriate capacity than the original.
