Designed in 1968, Wirkkala’s Ultima Thule contributed to iittala’s national breakthrough and remains a distinctive iittala design.The Ultima Thule stemmed red wine glass has textured sides that reference the northern icy terrain of Scandinavia. The unique texture of the glass is created by a time-laboring technique that is created by the molten glass burning the surface of the wooden moulds.

These wine glasses are unique in design (like rain drops on a window) rather than plain glass. The size of the stem is a great fit for a man or woman’s hand. Finally, these glasses will not break as easily when washed in a dishwasher.

I have always admired these glasses and am so glad I finally bought them. They arrived quickly and very well packaged. Although they are expensive, they are very sturdy and should last many years.

I had previously purchased some of these to add to my dishes of the same design and after I found out how versatile the size was for other beverages, I purchased more and love using them.
