Maija Louekari

After winning a design competition in 2003 with her Hetkiä/Moments design, artist Maija Louekari was immediately hired at Marimekko and has been producing massively popular prints ever since. All of her works thus far have been hand-drawn, sketch-like pictures. This technique is similar to Marimekko design alum Maija Isola. In favor with large, uniform images, Louekari likes to design for larger surfaces such as curtains. A dream of hers would be to one day see one of her prints plastered in giant size on the side of a building. For Louekari, “The design process operates continuously in my mind. Sometimes an idea can go on being shaped in my sleep. In that sense, creative design work cannot be distinguished from life. It is equivalent to living.” Constantly observing life, Louekari puts an immense amount of love into each print she creates so when its time for a new pattern to be released, she almost feels as if it is one of her children she is letting go into the wide world. A favorite among many, Maija Louekari designs continue to impress the masses.
